it is fun to finally reveal  my bathroom makeover over here. it has been so exciting to see over on west elm front + main, + on design * sponge; two places i adore.

the bathroom is only about 40 square feet, + it was not in the budget to change the footprint + had to keep it easily functioning for my 13 month old. you can see my original inspiration board, here.

the prior owner had really done a job on this bathroom [ well, both of them, actually] to the point of no return when it came to saving the original materials.  he had placed a stick laminate over the shower tile to cover the original + beautiful square porcelain 1950’s tile. with the adhesive he used, there was no way to save this. and of course that is heartbreaking.  i am all about coveting history, and fortunately for me there is a second bathroom in the house that does just that and still has the original textrus flooring:) although all aside from the flooring needs alot of work. but all in due time.

with all my design selections for this bath, i wanted to ensure i maintained the classic + chose era-friendly products. a good subway tile can certainly stand the test of time.  this subway tile is a 4×8 beveled which adds a little extra dimension. for the flooring i chose a grey penny round tile + i am truly obsessed with it; that + the shelving cut out.  the grout was a medium-color grey. i did learn to go darker than you think you want, because it does lighten a bit after installation. [ just a side note.]

my goal was to make this little bathroom feel like a breath of fresh air, especially with it being such a small space.  with that, i struggled with shower curtains. the space looked great as a whole + when the shower was blocked with a curtain, it just did not work. a glass door was out of the question both for budgetary reasons + functionality with a one year old. i decided to use just a simple clear shower-liner + it does the trick perfectly.

the other challenge i had with the space was the ceilings. as you can see in the first picture, the ceiling is on the roofline. i chose to paint the walls + ceilings all the same color of simply white by benjamin moore. this helps to keep the walls + ceiling a seamless line + takes away from the lowering ceiling angle.

That might just be one of the best before and afters that I’ve seen for a long time. Well done! Great pics as well :)

Beautiful space! I’m wondering, what’s the spacing you used for the subway tile in the shower? We’re thinking of doing a similar tile in our bathroom. I’ve seen some people line the tile right up next to each other without using spacers. Did that work for you? Thanks!

Hi Camilla! Thank you so much! Isn’t choosing spacing a tricky little thing! The spacers I chose were 1/16th.. just about what it would look like without spacers. But remember that grout helps to secure that tile. I love the outcome of the 1/16th of an inch!

I absolutely love this bathroom! I am remolding right now and I wish I had the money to have subway tiles installed. They look great! Where did you purchase that mirror? I have been looking for one just like this for weeks!

This is a perfect example of how you can glam up relatively inexpensive subway tile with just a little “bling” tile. Could you please share the source for the penny tile you used on the floor? I may have to just change the color scheme for my upcoming bathroom reno – I really love it. Thanks in advance!

Beautiful work! I was wondering, is that a clear shower curtain liner you used, or were you able to find a sheer shower curtain? I’ve been looking for a sheer shower curtain for a while and haven’t been able to find a good one yet. I love the open look, especially in a small bathroom.

Love everything in this bathroom, especially that hand towel holder. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this! Where did you purchase it?

My husband and I are in the midst of planning a bathroom reno, and have completely fallen for the gray penny rounds you used. Sadly, we can’t seem to find gray penny rounds anywhere locally! We’ve started hunting around online and haven’t had much success there either. I was hoping you could help point us the right direction. I see you mentioned that you got your tile from Floor & Decor. Are they the carrara bianco penny rounds? Thanks!

      Hi Eva –

Thank you for the comments on my bathroom!! The vanity is white with clean lines. It is only a 30″ vanity due to the small space.

I love your bathroom! It is gorgeous! Can you please share what kind of tile is used for the shower shelving? And is that a light grey grout? Thank you, you have great taste.

Hi there! Thank you for your kind comments! Totally making me smile!! I used the rectangular carrera marble (white + grey veining). For the grout, I used a medium-colored grey. Go darker than you think, because it dries lighter. Good luck!

        Christina,
I am loving your bathroom remodel. We are in the process of redoing ours and I happened to come across your pictures from pinterest. I love your style! I am looking for a grout color for our floors and shower. Do you remember the color you chose for the floors and for the subway tile? Thanks so much!

HI ! I am sorry, I think I misunderstood your first question. The shelf inset is the carrera marble. The tiles in the actual shower are white beveled subway tiles! Let me know if you have any more questions!

hi christina! you understood my first question lol! i think i am being unclear – i am obsessed with your recessed shower shelf/inset! i wanted to know how/where you got the marble trim and ledge (that divides the shelf in 2) for it. thanks so much for your quick responses!

ah- OK. So the recessed is carrera mosaic, the pencil molding (around the inset ) is carrerra, and the shelf is carrera. The shelf, also is carrera – it was a 12×12 tile that we cut to size for the shelf. If you need any help with your project, let me know!

Thank you so much for posting….I was searching online for grey penny tile and white subway tile look for my bathroom and found yours!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
I also was wondering if the grout was the exact same color too–for both bath and floor, are they both medium grey grout, from floors and decors? Does it matter what type of grout to get to insure a successful project?
Also, if you don’t mind sharing–where did you find the carrera mosaic inset? its so beautiful.
and lastly…where did you find your tub? it seems like a decent height for the kiddos. Do you like the depth for your own baths too?
Thank you, in advance, for all of your help. We can’t wait to get started with our remodel too!!

      Hi Georgiana!
thanks for the super kind words on my bathroom.
regarding the grout – i used the same color on both. the shower grout looks a bit darker because it is against the white tile. if you are in question on the color to choose, go darker than you think. it really lightens up in application. all my tiles including the carrera tile and the floor penny tile came from the store called floor and decor. As for the tub, the brand is bootz – it is just a run of the mill, generic tub. and i do like it alot. it is easy to bath my little girl and just as comfortable for myself. if you need any help with your remodel, let me know!

Hi! I absolutely am in love with the gray penny rounds….and ironically just ordered a sample for my bath reno last week!!! So excited to see them in a finished product. Couple questions for you….how are they holding up? (My sample is getting chipped but I’m hoping it’s just because I am hauling it around everywhere with me matching tiles. ;)) I am using mine for my shower floor and backsplash and just hoping they hold up to the test if time. In the shower I will be doing white subway tiles in a herringbone pattern….was planning on dark gray grout on the floor like you did…and then white grout for the walls. Are you happy with your choice to do matching gray grout on the walls? Wondering if I should reconsider…..
Also, did your grout come from Lowes or Home Depot? I desperately want to get the sane color you used!!! Do tell any info you have on it! :)
Thanks again for the beautiful inspiration.

        Hi Lyndsey

My penny rounds are holding up just fine. I purchased all my products from Floor & Decor. The grout is Montana Grey. I am definitely happy I made the choice for dark grout, but the white would certainly be beautiful. With a herringbone pattern, the grey would accentuate that detail.
