my home || living room

July 15, 2013

in case you missed it, my home was featured last week on style me pretty living! such a huge honor!  i wanted to share the design with you over here, as well – and because there are so many images, i decided to do a post a day of a room.  so today is the living room.  it is also shared with the [little] dining room as you can see to the back left, but i’ll be posting that tomorrow..

the home was built in 1956 + is 1,456 square feet.  it has 4 bedrooms + 2 full bathrooms.  you may have seen the newly remodeled bathroom on design*sponge, west elm, apartment therapy, or here. blown away on the coverage on that wee little bath. so grateful!

as you see, the living area is small, but full of windows like most of the home. i just love natural light.  in designing the space, i wanted it to feel light, bright + airy. a pretty + cozy version of modern.  a neutral mid century was the direction i took.  i mixed a lot of vintage finds with some new + layered with things of the same shades to keep things light. visually, if there is to much stuff, things get heavy on the eye.  the lamps behind the sofa add function + interest.  if  i was to have lamps on the floor to serve the same function, but takes up less visual + actual space on the floor.   with the coffee table, the clear class [although it is usually is filled with fingerprints] works out great – again, it adds that reflective factor without taking up visual space.

each item was pieced together over time with the same overall vision.  the sofa was the last piece, believe it or not, but it took me forever to find one i like + allowed options to move the chaise side to side. i also found it a challenge to find one that had both mid century lines + comfort. most of them the backs are too low.

the furniture under the television was a vintage find, + the shelves above i designed + had built. the danish modern chair to the left is a vintage find that i had reupholstered. you can see the before here.

below is how we live in the room – on the floor, toys strewn, remote waiting for the next episode of sesame street, books, snacks – you name it.  usually, however, the coffee table is full of some great reads; dr seuss, learn the abc’s, color books, counting books, see spot run.  all great for cocktail parties. and that cute little green 1960’s hasack  has been a great find serving so many uses.

    Hi Christina! You’ve created such a gorgeous space! I’m in the midst of trying to decorate a new home and I’ve been agonizing over different white paint colors. What did you use here?

      Hi Katy! Thank you so much!! The paint showed is Lamb by Martha Stewart! I just love it. Another great option is Pure White by Ben Moore! Good luck!

    HI, I absolutely love your home!! It’s sorta my dream home of mid-century modern. You’ve done a great job putting pieces together and decorating and also been so nice as to share with people where you purchased things. please keep sharing.
